“Give Up the Good Book, Pick Up a Good Gun” is a mantra rooted in the Western tradition and Dime Novels of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Dime Novel format focused on stories about the Wild West and quickly became popular with the soldiers on both sides during the American Civil War (1861–65). They were cheap, widely available, Western adventure narratives, written and read at a point when the American Wild West was being developed.
